Arnhem Land – Ancient Rock Art & Untouched Landscapes
Brookes Australia Tours is one of the very few selected professional tour operators to be been granted commercial permits to conduct tours into Arnhem Land via 4WD vehicles.
We combine the Arnhem Land trips with our Kakadu tours, giving our clients the ultimate experience only few visitors to the Top End get to appreciate.
On all of our 4WD Arnhem Land tours we depart Kakadu driving beneath the towering escarpment to the East Alligator River, the natural border to Arnhem Land. We engage 4WD, ford the crocodile infested river and with special permission from the traditional owners we visit a small Aboriginal community in West Arnhem Land known as Oenpelli.
At Oenpelli we have the chance to meet Aboriginal artists and weavers and watch them at work. This is rare opportunity to purchase genuine Aboriginal art and craft at wholesale prices (note - you are under no pressure to buy). Later we join an Aboriginal guided tour to a nearby ancient rock art site, dated in excess of 20,000 years.
Arnhem Land is located in the north-eastern corner of Australia's Northern Territory and bounded by Kakadu National Park, the Arafura Sea and the Gulf of Carpentaria. This Aboriginal-owned expanse is made up of wild coastlines, rivers teeming with fish, lush rainforests, soaring escarpments and savannah woodland.Being such a large expanse of land we only concentrate on the Western side of Arnhem Land as other remote destinations must be reached by light aircraft, which we can also arrange for you.
This land is one of the very few remaining unspoiled areas of the world where you find an untouched landscape. Its small population is predominantly indigenous and traditional Aboriginal culture remains largely intact.
The didgeridoo originated in Arnhem Land, and the area is also world-renowned for its distinctive, authentic Aboriginal art that we will share with you.
Arnhem Land is one of the best fishing destinations in the world, mainly owing to its seldom fished waters. Cruise inland on a tidal estuary in search of the massivebarramundi or if you want to extend the Arnhem Land experience, talk to us about combining it with the world famous Mt Borradaile Safari lodge.
We can drop you off at the Lodge via 4WD or light aircraft and give you the opportunity to explore 50,000 year old rock art interpreted by knowledgeable guides at Mt Borradaile, a true nature experience that won’t disappoint.
Enjoy fine meals and accommodation in permanent ensuited cabins, a guaranteed must for the traveller wanting to experience untouched waterways, native woodlands, amazing displays of birdlife and Aboriginal culture right outside your door. After your stay you will return to Darwin via light aircraft viewing the spectacular landscape with a birds-eye view.
