Katherine – Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park Situated 320 kilometres south-east of Darwin, Katherine is set on the banks of the Katherine River. This unique outback town of around8,000 people is the region’s major service centre. When we visit the Katherine district, one of the main attractions is the famous Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park covering an awesome 3,000 sq km of the magnificent sandstone escarpment. Nitmiluk, meaning ‘cicada place’ to the local Aboriginal people. The Katherine River system flows through 13 separate gorges that carve their way through the Arnhem Plateau. If you choose to take the 2 hour gorge cruise you will travel between sheer cliffs to the sandy freshwater beaches of the main gorges, and view ancient Aboriginal rock paintings high on the rock faces above. We can take you on short bush walk’s venturing to the top of the gorge for a fantastic view from above whilst also looking out over this amazing country in the distance pointing out areas where the river has peaked during times of floods. Katherine has hidden natural wonders and a rich indigenous and pioneering history.The region has many amazing historical and cultural interests. On request we can also visit the land of the lightening brothers, 2 hours drive west of Katherine. Mr Bill Harney (Yidumduma) author of the book “Born under thepaperback trees” is a well respected Elder and the last Senior Male Aboriginal custodian of the Wardaman people. He is recognized throughout the world as an artist of high esteem on many different stages. He is a master storyteller, song man,didgeridoo player/maker, painter and writer. All his art forms have the deepest roots in the celebration of his Wardaman Aboriginal heritage and his unique ability to “walk in both worlds” and communicate the joy of his culture to a global Other attractions we can take you to within easy reach of Katherine include the Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park, the Katherine HotSprings and Leliyn (Edith Falls), a fantastic place that we can take you swimming in a natural rock pool or just a great place to sit and getsome memorable pictures of this fantastic landscape.
