Day 5: A fascinating journey back in time. We fly you deep into Western Arnhem Land to a private bush airstrip at Mt Borradaile, then travel by open air 4WD for this once in a lifetime experience. You will find no boardwalks, signposts, sealed roads or barriers out here. Aboriginal people have roamed, hunted and gathered throughout this land for at least 60,000 years. They have left the evidence of their occupation in caves and under rocky overhangs by way of grind holes in the sandstone were they prepared their food and also by way of some of the most colourful, prolific and oldest rock art to be seen anywhere in the world. Understand the meanings behind the ancient rock art galleries with interpretation by experienced and knowledgeable guides. There is literally layer upon layer of colourful paintings. Some dating back more than 25,000 years, including the famous X-ray style right up to art of the more recent, so called contact period, adorning the rock walls and caves of the many sandstone outcrops in the area.

Overlooking vast wetlands these galleries provide a fascinating sight into an ancient world. Learn about the burial rites of this ancient culture Discover the beauty of the bush, eucalypt forests, vast floodplains, billabongs and coastal wilderness, abundant in native birds and animals - the red tail black cockatoo, magpie geese, brolga, jabiru, wallaby, frilled neck lizard, goanna and dingo to name but a few. Learn about traditional foods and medicines. Late afternoon fly on to Darwin. ETA 5.30pm. (BL)
